A pungent member of the mint family, it’s leaves have been used medicinally for some 2,000 years.

The leaves contain compounds known to have sedative, digestive and anti-spasmodic effects.

There are no known documented side effects. However, it may inhibit certain thyroid hormones. People with Graves’ or other thyroid-related problems should use with caution, if at all.

Lemon Balm tea can be made from fresh or dried leaves. It helps calm nerves, ease menstrual cramps, reduce fever and aid sleep.

  1. 2 teaspoons to one cup boiling water, steep 10-20 minutes

Lemon Balm also makes a wonderfully fragrant addition to pillows, herbal soaks, rubs and salves.

Make a poultice with crushed leaves to sooth insect stings, bites. Also good to help heal wounds.
