Both China and Europe have grown Licorice since ancient times.
Licorice is most well known for it’s use in candy but is most widely used to flavor tobacco products and throat lozenges.
Real licorice is strong and should be used with caution. Many candies on the market today contain artificial licorice flavoring.
Too much Licorice flavored tobacco or candy risks overdose. Symptoms include weakness, water retention and high blood pressure. Consuming small amounts can be beneficial to a soar throat. Confine your enjoyment to only a few pieces to be on the safe side. Avoid like the plague if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or glaucoma.
If you have ulcers you may want to ask your health care professional about trying DGL (de-glycyrrhizinated licorice), it’s known to work just as well as some of the more conventional stuff but without all the heavy risk.
For a soar throat and to help ease a cough try a pinch of powered herb in water or tea.
