RE: Your response from Senator Bill Nelson

Dear Ms. Dixey:
Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation that would amend the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). As you may know, FIFRA governs the labeling, distribution, sale, and use of pesticides, and to protect human health and the environment from unreasonable adverse effects from pesticides.
Recently, the House passed H.R. 872, a bill that would amend both FIFRA and the Clean Water Act to exempt applications of some pesticides from the Clean Water Act’s permitting system. Senate bill S. 718, which is similar, but not identical to the House bill, would accomplish the same aim.
I am committed to a clean environment and I am concerned about the health implications of long-term exposure to pesticides. I also understand the importance of keeping dangerous, disease-carrying pests from destroying crops and harming humans.
H.R. 872 was recently reported favorably out of the Senate Agriculture Committee and is awaiting action on the Senate Calendar. I will be sure to keep you views in mind if it reaches the Senate floor for a full vote.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact my office, and please do not hesitate to do so in the future.
Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson
