Dear Mrs. Dixey,
Thank you for taking the time to contact me to express your concerns regarding our nation’s foreign assistance programs.
I am proud of the remarkable generosity and leadership shown by the American people when it comes to helping people in need around the world. Our foreign assistance programs are strategic elements in our nation’s foreign policy; they help save American lives and tax dollars that would otherwise be spent on costly U.S. military interventions in regions where our national interests might be threatened.
However, despite large aid packages from the U.S. and international organizations, poor countries remain affected by economic stagnation, preventable diseases and corruption. While international stability is important, we cannot neglect the fiscal issues we face here at home. The dire fiscal situation facing our nation concerns me, and I believe we need to be more judicious about our nation’s foreign policy priorities. For these reasons, I support foreign aid programs that include accountability measures and a clear framework that advances good governance, economic freedom and respect for the rule of law in recipient nations.
As a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations I will continue to work to maintain the United States’ leadership role in diplomatic and humanitarian efforts across the globe. Furthermore, I believe that results-oriented foreign aid plays an important role in the security of our nation. As Congress continues to debate important issues surrounding our nation’s serious fiscal situation and government spending, I will certainly keep your thoughts regarding federal funding to foreign assistance programs in mind.
I appreciate your opinions and I look forward to addressing the concerns of the people of Florida. I will work diligently to ensure that the United States remains a safe and prosperous nation.
Sincerely, Marco Rubio United States Senator
